Artist Music Series
Led by classical guitarist Petar Jankovic, the ensemble also features the string
quartet of violinists Maria Storm and Azusa Tashiro, violist Amanda Grimm and
cellist Kyra Saltman.
Their repertoire ranges from traditional
Spanish works by Albeniz and De Falla to classical jewels by Shostakovich and
Debussy to passionate Piazzola tangos and rich Brazilian music forms of
Gnatalli and Bellinati.
Jankovic, who began studying guitar at
the age of 8 in his native Yugoslavia, is a visiting lecturer of music at
Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. After many years of touring the
world largely as a solo performer, he initiated the ensemble, combining his
Spanish and Latin American influences with the string quartet’s European
Storm, a concertmaster of
Composers Orchestra of Chicago, made her solo debut at age 14 with the Odessa
Symphony Orchestra in Ukraine. While living in Europe, she established herself
as an active soloist and chamber musician, performing with the Torun Chamber
Orchestra and Rubinstein Symphony Orchestra, among others.
Tashiro, a native of
Japan, began playing violin at the age of 4. She is the principal second
violinist of the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and has performed with various
ensembles, such as the New Millennium Orchestra Chicago, Milwaukee Symphony
Orchestra and Civic Orchestra of Chicago (for which she was appointed as a
Grimm, the associate principal viola of Orchestra Iowa, has
performed as a soloist, recitalist and concertmaster in the United States and
abroad. Making her concerto debut at age 15 with the Parma Symphony Orchestra,
Grimm also has soloed with the Baldwin Wallace Youth Orchestra, the Blue Lake
European Orchestra, the Carnegie Mellon Baroque Ensemble and the Carnegie
Saltman, the principal
cellist of the Chicago Composers Orchestra, has performed with the Aspen
Festival Orchestra, Aspen Opera Theater Orchestra, the Illinois Symphony, Green
Bay Symphony, Wisconsin Philharmonic and the New Millennium Orchestra of
Chicago, as well as numerous festivals.
