About

Calkins, a native of Cottage Grove, Minn., is the director of music at Berea College in Kentucky. He has appeared in leading roles with opera companies throughout North America and Europe.

Calkins also was featured as Cassio in “Otello” on an A&E nationwide production of “Spotlight Colorado” and starred in a National Public Broadcasting System television production and world premiere of Robert Greenleaf’s “Under the Arbor.” In addition, he has performed throughout the United States in Broadway touring productions of “Phantom of the Opera.”

In 2009, Calkins and Lawrence appeared in recital at the fourth International Conference on the Physiology and Acoustics of Singing at the University of Texas-San Antonio. In April of this year, they performed at a gala fundraising concert for the new Cancer Center at Georgia Regents University.

Lawrence, the Endowed Chair of Voice at the University of Kentucky, also is a leading artist with opera companies worldwide, ranging from operas in Chicago and New York City to Paris and London.

Lawrence appeared in more than 70 concerts with the late Luciano Pavarotti, touring throughout the United States and abroad in Qatar, Italy, Chile, Venezuela, Argentina, Germany, Norway, Japan, China, Malaysia, England, Canada and South Africa. She was one of 20 guests asked to speak at Pavarotti’s memorial, which was held in Petra, Jordan.

The evening after the memorial, she sang at a benefit concert broadcast worldwide from Little Petra, helping raise millions of dollars for Afghan children and for refugees and the disabled in Jordan.
